Watson Library is pleased to announce that we will resume full service beginning Tuesday, September 7th.
The last date to submit scan requests through this site will be Thursday, September 2nd.
All scan requests in process will be delivered by Friday, September 3rd.
We look forward to seeing you back in the library!
Required Accounts
- Services are provided to registered Watson Library researchers. New users may self-register by completing the online form here.
- All scanning requests must be made through ILLiad, Watson Library’s document delivery system. Registered Watson library users must also register for ILLiad by completing the online form here.
- Once both accounts have been verified, you will receive an email from watson.library@metmuseum.org with your ILLiad username and password, after which you may begin placing requests.
Service Details
- The library adheres to U.S. copyright law [United States Copyright Act of 1976]. In particular, Section 107, the Fair Use Doctrine, and Section 108, Reproduction by Libraries and Archives, serve as guiding principles behind scanning service policies and procedures.
- This service is for scans from books and journals currently listed as “Requestable” in Watson Library’s Stacks.
- We will scan a maximum of three requests per week for a researcher.
- If you are requesting multiple chapters from a single book, each chapter must be submitted as a separate request.
- Generally, the library will only scan limited portions of a work. Typically two articles from a single journal issue, two chapters of a book, not to exceed 10% of the publication.
- Requests may take up to one week to be fulfilled.
- When your request is ready, you will receive an email from Watson Library Scanning Service with instructions on how to download it.
Exceptions
- Researchers affiliated with an academic institution as student or faculty should use the interlibrary loan service offered by their institution.
- Departmental library materials. Departmental libraries are inaccessible to Watson staff and books from those libraries cannot be retrieved for scanning.
- Offsite books and journals. Offsite items are not currently available for scanning.
- Microfilm, rare books, or already checked out items. Requests for scanning of these materials cannot be filled.
- Online resources. The library will assess each request to determine if it is available online for free, or through the library's subscription e-resources. If a digitized copy is available, a link or PDF will be forwarded to the requester.
We are committed to serving our international community of researchers. Please note that this service is offered on a trial basis. Depending on demand, we may reduce the maximum number of requests per week, or introduce other quotas. Please be reasonable in your requests. We look forward to welcoming researchers back to Watson Library sometime in early 2021. If you have questions about this service, please email watson.library@metmuseum.org.
